CoQ10: When to Take It & How to Track It

Also called: Coenzyme Q10, Ubiquinone, Ubiquinol

By Last updated

What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance the body makes that helps cells produce energy and acts as an antioxidant. Levels are highest in the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas, and they decline with age. CoQ10 is sold as capsules and soft gels, and is often taken by people on statins in the hope of reducing muscle pain. NCCIH says the overall evidence does not support that use, and research on heart failure is inconclusive. CoQ10 can interact with a few medicines, so recording when you take it is useful for your pharmacist.

When to take CoQ10: general timing information

  • The overall evidence does not support CoQ10 for reducing statin-related muscle pain, and research on heart failure is inconclusive. [1]

  • CoQ10 may interact with the blood thinner warfarin and with insulin. Talk to your doctor before combining them. [1]

  • Medicines that lower blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar may decrease the effects of CoQ10. [2]

  • No serious side effects have been reported, though mild insomnia or digestive upset may occur. If it affects your sleep, a time earlier in the day may suit you better. [1]
